Nitronic 60 Description
Nitronic 60 is an austenitic stainless steel that resists seizure and wear. It offers a significantly lower cost alternative to cobalt-containing and high-nickel alloys to resist wear and seizure. The uniform corrosion resistance of Nitronic 60 is superior to that of 304 in most media. Its resistance to chloride ion pitting is better than 316. At room temperature, Nitronic 60 also has excellent high temperature oxidation resistance and low temperature impact resistance. Due to its grain structure, Nitronic 60 resists seizure better than any other stainless steel. It resists wear, tear or freezing of primary and contact materials over a wide range of service temperatures. Even though Nitronic 60 has a relatively low hardness compared to cobalt and nickel-based wear-resistant alloys, its wear resistance at high temperatures is still excellent. It also performs well in metal-to-metal wear in a substantially inert atmosphere. Nitronic 60's cavitation corrosion resistance is superior to that of austenitic stainless steels and high-strength duplex (ferrite-austenite) stainless steels.
Corrosion resistance
The general corrosion resistance of Nitronic 60 is between 304 and 316. However, in a wearing system, seizure or sticking failure occurs first, followed by dimensional loss due to wear, and finally corrosion. Although Nitronic 60 is not as generally corrosion resistant as 316, it does offer better resistance to chloride pitting, stress corrosion cracking, and crevice corrosion. In high temperature service, Nitronic 60 exhibits superior carburization properties to 316L and 309. Its oxidation resistance is much better than 304 and 316 and comparable to 309.
